About Nectaroscordum Siculum

Nectaroscordum Siculum, also known as 'Sicilian Honey Garlic' or 'Mediterranean Bells' produces delicate and beautiful flowers that make a perfect addition to any ornamental spring garden. As the plant begins to grow, the dozens of flowers are encased in pointed, narrow sheaths that, with time, will shed revealing clusters of the delicate bell-shaped flowers. Each dainty pendant, with cream-coloured hues, is flushed with purple and green stripes and is surrounded by three-sided blue-gray leaves that twist as they grow. The nectar and pollen rich flowers are a favorite amongst hummingbirds and other pollinators and will return year after year due to its perennializing and self-sowing nature.

How to Grow Nectaroscordum

Planting Nectaroscordum

  • Plant these bulbs in fall.
  • If you cannot plant your bulbs right away store them in a cool, dry, dark location, like a basement.
  • Plant them with the pointy end up in a sunny to semi-shaded area about 13 cm (5 in) deep and 10 to 13 cm (4 to 5 in) apart.
  • Water thoroughly after planting.

Growing Nectaroscordum

  • These bulbs do best in well-drained soil.
  • These bulbs are suitable for almost every possible application: fields, beds, containers, borders, rock gardens and as cut flowers.
  • These bulbs look good planted in groups at the base of trees or in wooded areas.
  • Plant in groups of eight or more bulbs which then appear more natural.

Nectaroscordum Care

  • These bulbs are deer resistant and work great in areas where deer or rodents are a problem.
  • When in bloom, feel free to cut some flowers for bouquets. The flowers can be picked without damaging the plant.
  • These flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies.

Winterizing Nectaroscordum

  • After flowering, the leaves should be allowed to die down. The leaves will gather sunlight and provide nourishment for next year’s show.
  • It is helpful to fertilize the bulbs through winter and also as the foliage dies down in summer.
  • These bulbs come back for several years.
